I think the point is OpenDHT is a service and Bittorrent is an application

take e.g. 
1.Bittorrent has no way of guaranteeing that the value u put will stay there for 7 days, while opendht does
2.with Bittorrent, the last chunk of your movie may take hours (even days) to download just because the peer with that particular chunk is on vacation, bittorrent will not call that a failure, for opendht, it's a (service) failure and will have to be fixed

Hi all.

Thanks for building the OpenDHT service.

I just have a simple (maybe very infantility) question.

If we intend to build the DHT as a service, is it worthy or not?

I mean OpenDHT doesn't need any peer application to join to help the
service, so OpenDHT has to get some host machines by itself. For e.g., now
OpenDHT is hosted on planetlab machines. 

If OpenDHT is to use dedicated machines to run the service, why we need
OpenDHT? 

If a company or an org buys 100 machines and run a simpler application
(simpler than chord, pastry or etc) to give the functionality to let user
put(key, value) and get(key, value) (may not be called DHT any more), is
that better or more stable?

For e.g., BitTorrent is successful because the system utilise and let every
peer utilise every other peer's uploading. It let peers take part in the
system. If BitTorrent does not let peers join, it won't be successful,
right?

So, if OpenDHT intends to give dedicated service to all peers, can OpenDHT
called Distributed or p2p application anymore?
